2nd Grade Curriculum

Language Arts/Reading 

                    GOALS: 

The students of Ascension School will: 

·                    Follow directions, develop dictionary skills and take tests

·                    Read charts and graphs, identify parts of a book, write words in alphabetical order

·                    Develop independent decoding strategies

·                    Review initial, medial and final consonants

·                    Learn compound words. Contractions, inflected endings, prefixes, suffixes, and root words

·                    Write sentences and stories

·                    Identify subject, verb and pronouns

·                    Explain sentence structure

·                    Learn paragraph formation and mechanics of proper sentence capitalization & punctuation

·                    Analyze text

·                    Organize and synthesize information

·                    Set purpose, generate questions, paraphrase, predict, assess, summarize and visualize stories

·                    Reinforce skills in cause-effect, classification, compare & contrast, read aloud, and conclusions

·                    Read independently

·                    Respond to stories with discussions, illustrations and creating their own stories

·                    Develop listening, writing and speaking skills by applying correct grammar and mechanics
