Fourth Grade Curriculum

Reading 

                    GOALS: 

The students of Ascension School will: 

·                    Learn vocabulary words through definition and context clues

·                    Practice words study skills through homonyms, compound words, suffixes, prefixes and multiple meaning words

·                    Read stories, poems, articles orally and along with tapes

·                    Enhance study skills with dictionary/glossary work, encyclopedias, following directions, maps, studying parts of books

·                    Check comprehension by generalization, sequencing, detailing, cause and effect, finding main ideas, predicting outcomes and drawing conclusions

·                    Use story elements by characterization, setting, theme, plot, point of view and mood

·                    Identify literary terms:  fiction, non-fiction, poetry, fantasy

·                    Create themes for book reports such as  historical fiction, mystery, animal stories, biographies, sports themes 

CONTENT: 

·                    reading for comprehension

·                    plot and character development

·                    sequence of events, summarization, analysis

·                    classification, comparison & contrast

·                    types of literary works:  fiction, fantasy, poetry

·                    following directions

·                    context clues

·                    syllabication and word attack
